Desert Tract Homes, Outdoor Units and Freeze Risk
Much of Lancaster and Palmdale is single-story stucco tract housing, and many tankless units here are mounted outside on a side wall. That placement saves indoor space and simplifies venting, but it exposes the unit and its piping to high-desert freezes.
A freeze can split water lines, crack the heat exchanger or damage valves in a single night if the unit loses power or the protection fails. We install units rated for outdoor use, insulate exposed lines, confirm the built-in freeze protection has power and recommend a freeze protection kit or drain-down plan where it makes sense. Indoor or garage installs are often the safer choice for homes with long exposed runs.
Sizing changes here too. Winter cold inlet water temperature in the high desert is lower than near the coast, which means a bigger temperature rise and less hot water per minute from the same unit. A unit that keeps up with two showers in Torrance may only handle one and a half in Lancaster. We size for your winter conditions, not an LA average.
